Fat Spoon Café @ Damansara Uptown

It’s a great weekend and my friend and I decided to check out this famous restaurant in Damansara Uptown. Situated on the same row as Wondermilk Cupcakes and Hon Kee Porridge, Fat Spoon Café is a quaint and quirky restaurant with grandma’s recipe Nyonya cuisine.

Walking into Fat Spoon make me feel like I was brought back to my childhood days in my grandma’s home –old fashioned ceramic teapot, wooden stools, rattan sofas, rustic and vintage slate floor and walls.

Let the pictures speak for themselves…….

Don’t feel surprise when u gets a story book – story book as their menu. I’ve been to so many restaurants/cafés but there are nothing like Fat Spoon having a priceless and special storybook menu.

Menu is also plastered on a chalkboard – their best sellers!!!!!

After gawking at the menu, we decided to order Homemade Bubur Cha Cha, Ulam Fried Rice, Perut Ikan with extra egg, Cempedak Spring Rolls with Vanilla Ice-Cream, Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice-Cream, and also Nutella Ice-Cream. Within 15 minutes..............

First up…Homemade Bubur Cha Cha [RM4.90]-one of the well-known Nyonya desserts which cooked in sweet coconut milk base with sweet potato, yam (taro) and sago (pearls of starch). Frankly speaking, the Homemade Bubur Cha Cha is not my cup-of-tea as it is too mushy (maybe the yam, sweet potato and sago are overcooked) and lackluster – supposed to have tapioca jelly with it.

Ulam Fried Rice [RM11.90] – Besides being inexpensive, one gets a bowl of wok-fried rice studded with herbs, fried chicken, belacan long bean and also pappadum. This Nyonya dish will plunge you into Nyonya itself with exquisite flavors that make your taste buds tingle. With little spicy and robust, it’ll surely make you come back for more.

Perut Ikan [RM14.90] + extra fried egg [RM1.20] – One of the most requested recipes on Nyonya food. The stewed fish stomach with various vegetables and exotic herbs appeared to be a very tedious dish to make (previously preserved and salted) but the taste structure reveals an exciting and complex layer of flavor. The very first bite of that spoonful of perut ikan sent me spiraling down memory lane. Overall, the dish is mouth-watering with its salty and sourish flavor.

Cempedak Spring Rolls with Vanilla Ice-Cream [RM9.90] - No matter how full you are, you will always have room for dessert. A typical deep fried popiah with satisfying crunch to the soft of viscid cempedak within; mixed with cold creamy vanilla ice-cream melted in the mouth, give rise to craving for one more piece – certainly one of the dessert to-die-for. Followed by Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice-Cream [RM9.90] – The moist chocolate cake melts in my mouth, sticky with fudge frosting on my tongue. However, there was a weird metallic taste in the chocolate cake.

Rounding up the night, we had a Nutella Ice-Cream [RM9.20] – homemade ice-cream. This cheerful frozen version of nutty hazelnut chocolate ice-cream certainly soothes away all the worries of your day!!!!

Overall Rating: 7/10. Fat Spoon serves up quaintness Malaysian style food – reasonable price and decent portion. I would definitely come back for more!!!
